The first time I met Joan was at an MIT Sloan semi-formal. I was with a group of friends wandering around the grounds of the inn where the semi-formal was being held. A woman approached and asked if she could take a picture of us. None of us knew who the woman was, but she was so friendly we happily posed for a picture. As the woman focused the camera on us, her big smile turned into a great laugh. The smile and laugh were very familiar and helped reveal Joan’s identity as Debbie’s mom. As my friendship with Debbie grew over the years, I had the fortune of spending time with Joan and Arthur on several occasions. One of those occasions was at my wedding. Although we were thrilled that Joan took lots of photos, the photographer we hired was not. Joan’s pictures arrived in our mailbox long before we the photographer’s proofs and we ordered fewer photos from the photographer as a result. (But I think Joan even won over the photographer with her fearless attempts to get the perfect shot, and of course, her laugh.) I will always remember Joan’s big smile, great laugh, and generous heart.
